Mai Po welcomes our newest buffalo guardian!
Over the past six years, buffalo grazing has been used as an effective freshwater habitat management tool at Mai Po Nature Reserve. Now, there's a new buffalo in the pond! In addition to "Siu Mai" and "Wo Muk", the Reserve's two current resident buffaloes, a 10 year-old male Asian Water Buffalo has joined the crew. The Reserve's newest buffalo has already joined the "guardian league" and will be working closely with his teammates after settling down.
There's only one problem: he needs a name! WWF would like to invite you to take part in our buffalo-naming competition. Don't miss your chance to win the honour of naming this beautiful animal and four free entry passes to this year's Walk for Nature! |

Good news for sharks
Cathay Pacific (CX) announced on 5 September that it would no longer carry unsustainably produced shark or shark products on its cargo flights. WWF welcomes this announcement, and regards it as a significant development which will have real impacts on the unsustainable shark fishery industry. CX has left the door open to
carrying shark product from sustainable sources. There are now two Marine Stewardship
Council (MSC) certified shark fisheries.
This decision was taken on the recommendation of CX's Cargo Advisory Panel. The Panel invites a number of organizations and experts to provide scientific views or advise on matters regarding sustainability. WWF is one of the panel members. |

WWF's latest reports on live reef food fish trade and shark conservation
The 10th International Seafood Summit successfully took place on 6-8 September for the first time in Hong Kong. To mark the summit, WWF released two reports, one on the live reef food fish trade and the other on shark conservation. The first study revealed legal and policy gaps in the trade of live reef food fish in the Coral Triangle. It highlighted the problem of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
In terms of shark conservation, two of the Coral Triangle countries, Indonesia and Malaysia are among the top 20 shark catching nations in the world. The new report highlighted the general absence of effective and responsible management of shark resources in the Coral Triangle and a more concerted effort is necessary to conserve these top predators.

Leave a legacy for the Earth
The public's quick response and altruistic action in response to the recent plastic pellet spill after Typhoon Vicente revealed that the people of Hong Kong don't just care for our current living environment, but also about leaving a sustainable planet for future generations. To continue contributing to the planet's future beyond one's lifetime, one may consider making a planned gift to WWF-Hong Kong. A planned gift is a promise that is made to safeguard the planet's future without affecting one's current financial situation.
To learn how to help sustain the planet through a planned gift, please visit our website, write to plannedgiving@wwf.org.hk or call us on 2526-1011. |
