The Year of the Rooster is almost here. There are 12 Chinese zodiac animals, each with their own characteristics. The rooster epitomizes fidelity and punctuality. Both of these attributes are showcased in the natural wonder of bird migration. This year, wintering bird species have returned to Mai Po Nature Reserve, right on time. One of these is the Black-faced Spoonbill, listed as an endangered species on the IUCN’s Red List.

Each year, Black-faced Spoonbills migrate southward to their wintering sites. Yet most of these wetlands are threatened by dense human settlements, resulting in habitat pollution and destruction which negatively impacts the survival of many migratory birds like the Black-faced Spoonbill.

WWF is devoted to effectively managing Mai Po Nature Reserve to ensure the continued preservation and security of wetlands; keeping them abundant with food for birds like the Black-faced Spoonbill. After over 30 years of conservation efforts, a 2016 census revealed that the global population of Black-faced Spoonbills has increased significantly – from just 288 individuals in 1990 to 3,356.

We need your support to continue our conservation work and provide a high-quality habitat for Black-faced Spoonbills and other migratory birds in the future.
