Earth Hour is a global event created by the people for the planet, and the commitment made goes beyond one hour. It symbolizes what can happen when the world acts together, and in celebration of the planet's future. Earth Hour is held each year on the last Saturday in March — which means the next Earth Hour event will be held on Saturday 26 March, 2011. Mark it on your calendar now!

Earth Hour is a WWF global environmental initiative, and you are invited to turn off your lights for one hour and plan your own fun activity with your family and friends. This act of switching off lights is a symbolic pledge to take ongoing sustainable action for the year ahead. You can join the global pursuit for a sustainable future and take positive steps beyond the Earth Hour event itself. Sign up and share your experience with others on the web!

Earth Hour began in 2007, when two million people switched off their lights in Sydney, Australia, in response to WWF's call to action. In 2010, a record 128 countries and over 4,000 cities worldwide joined the movement, and it is estimated that hundreds of millions of people participated. In 2010, over 2.5 million people in Hong Kong supported Earth Hour by turning off their lights.

Earth Hour 2011 will go beyond the hour and the theme of climate change, by asking people to commit to environmentally sustainable action throughout the coming year. We need to ensure that we reduce our demands on Earth's natural resources, as we are currently consuming more than the Earth can support. This is evident from our recently published "Ecological Footprint Report". Let's support Earth Hour and commit to consuming wisely and to choosing sustainable and low-carbon options!
